nomus runs as a Chrome extension (Chrome 116 or newer and other Chromium browsers, on Mac, Windows and Linux), as an app for macOS 14.2+ and Linux, and as an Android app (Android 10+). Download page.

Start filtering a Chrome tab

1. Install nomus from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open a tab that plays sound: a video, a podcast, a lecture.
3. Press ⌘ Shift Y (Ctrl Shift Y on Windows and Linux), or click the nomus icon and choose Filter this tab.
4. The icon shows ON. Press the shortcut again, or click Stop, to hear the original.

The macOS and Linux apps

Open nomus and turn the filter on. It filters everything the computer plays. On macOS the first start asks you to allow system audio recording (Privacy & Security, Screen & System Audio Recording); nomus cannot filter until you allow it. On Linux nomus adds an output device called nomus and makes it the default while the filter is on; it puts your previous output back when you turn it off.

The Android app

Start filtering in the app and allow capture when Android asks. For the originals to be muted, you need the one-time setup in the Android setup guide. Without it you hear each app twice.

Common problems

Filter this tab is greyed out

Chrome does not let extensions capture its own pages, such as chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store and the new tab page. Open an ordinary website and try again.

The sound plays but nothing changes

Open the nomus popup and check that Mode is nomus-v1, not Bypass, and that Strength is up. If the status line shows an error, click Stop, then Filter this tab again. If that does not help, turn nomus off and on in chrome://extensions.

Some music still comes through

nomus works best when voices lead. When the music is much louder than the speaker, or an instrument sounds very like a voice (a solo violin, a synth lead), part of it passes. Singing is kept on purpose.

The sound is slightly behind the picture

nomus adds 20 milliseconds, too little to see on a speaker's lips. Wireless headphones add their own delay on top. Wired headphones or speakers remove that part.

Only one tab is filtered

nomus filters one tab at a time. Starting it on a second tab moves it there.

Does it work on my phone?

On Android, yes: set it up here. Apps that block audio capture, such as Spotify and Netflix, play unfiltered. There is no iPhone version: iOS does not let an app process other apps' audio.

Is there a Windows app?

No. The Chrome extension works on Windows. Windows lets an app copy what other apps play but not silence the original, so a whole-system filter there would need a signed kernel audio driver.

Linux says it cannot create the nomus device

nomus needs PipeWire 0.3.49 or newer, the default on Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12, Linux Mint 22 and Pop!_OS 24.04. Ubuntu 22.04 and Linux Mint 21 use PulseAudio by default and are not supported.

My sound output changed after nomus crashed on Linux

Start nomus again. It puts your usual output device back as the default on the next launch.
